Spring is here early. Has warmer weather brought more shootings to Chicago?
Homicides are up slightly this March, while non-fatal shootings hold steady and are dramatically lower than their 2021 peak.
In Chicago in 2024, murders committed with firearms are slightly up through March 1-18 compared to previous early March shooting data. Non-fatal shootings are in line with recent trends but way down since 2021, when 167 people were shot (23, fatally) within 18 days in Chicago.
This visualization shows the number of fatal and non-fatal firearm injuries committed with a firearm in the city of Chicago annually, from March 1-18, since 2018. Use the interactive link & hover over the year areas for fatality & injury counts.
Things could be worse, but they could also be better. In 2019 a “mere” 88 people were shot in early March in Chicago, compared to 119 in 2024. Also this is not a final count since there are 8 hours left in the day and I ran these numbers at 3pm. I will update them tomorrow, but considering it’s a Monday and cold AF outside I doubt we’ll see a ton of gun violence activity tonight.
