Memorial day is a peak gun violence holiday

Memorial day marks the unofficial beginning of summer. It’s also one of the worst long weekends for firearm violence in our cities, and it’s been worsening since 2018.

835 people were shot during the 3-day Memorial weekend in 2022, compared to 490 in 2014, a tragic 70% increase. The amount of firearm violence we observe this Memorial holiday, where we observe it, and how it compares to previous years will be instructive. I’ll be reporting this at the 1000 Cities Project.
