Fewer Shootings; More Charts
A mid-year update tracking firearm homicides in the 50 states (and D.C.), plus projections for 2025.
I am sitting on a trove of charts depicting firearm violence trends for the first half of 2025.
First, a snapshot of state firearm homicide counts for the first half of 2025 compared to the first half of 2024. Arizona is the only populous states where gun murders increased.
Next, here are six charts reporting annual firearm homicide counts from 2014-2025 at the state level, grouped by region.1 2025 estimates are based on monthly averages using January through June data.
These charts report homicide counts instead of rates, so this data is best used to compare state-level homicides over time. Firearm Homicide Rates (FHRs) per 100,000 are used to evaluate how many gun murders states have relative to other states. I’ll report these in a companion post. I will follow up with non-fatal injuries, which occur 2 to 3x more often than fatalities but are often overlooked in discussions of firearm violence trends.
These charts don’t group states by official US Census Regions, since that would be too cluttered. Some charts group states by US Census District, while others combine districts for better visualization.
